Help your Society
Our Society is run by volunteers, and there are many ways to get involved.
You don’t have to be a family history expert, join a committee or make a major commitment. We are particularly looking for new local volunteers who can help us expand what we are able to offer at the Research Centre.
Help at the Research Centre
Our Research Centre is currently open on Mondays, and we hope to extend its opening hours as more volunteers come forward.
Our stewards welcome visitors, help them find their way around the Centre and make use of its resources. They can also help visitors use research websites such as Ancestry and Findmypast and, where they have the experience, suggest approaches to family history research.
You don’t need to know all the answers
A friendly face, a willingness to help and an interest in family history are what matter most. A training manual is being prepared to help new stewards become familiar with the role.

Help us make historic records accessible
Every Wednesday, volunteers work with original documents at Lincolnshire Archives, transcribing and checking records which can then be made available to Society members. Current projects include Poor Law records, Petty Sessions, Coroners’ records and Quarter Sessions records. This is a great opportunity if you enjoy working with historical documents and would like to help preserve and make accessible material that could be valuable to family historians. You’d be joining a friendly team which breaks for lunch and has flexible working hours. You would not have to commit to every Wednesday.
Other ways to help
There are also opportunities to help with branches, events, projects and the general running of the Society. Some activities require particular skills; others simply need someone who is willing to learn and lend a hand.
